The Conductor

The Conductor

the conductor
raises the baton
inside the heart sings

This is the first in a new collection of portraits. Primarily, each piece will be creative people in action.

Why a conductor to start off the collection? This week was the birthday of world class opera conductor, Milen Nachev, who is a friend. The portrait is of Milen in action!

Actually, his wife is one of my closest friends. Antonia Joy Wilson was the FIRST female conductor as the protege to Leonard Slatkin (in the early 70s–St. Louis, MO). I’m currently working on a portrait of Antonia.

Milen and Antonia met at an opera workshop where he was teaching. Two years later they married.

The style I’m after is sort of an abstract impressionism. I don’t want a lot of detail — more about simplicity, a touch of color in the black and white, and little strokes to maintain softness.

One Response to “The Conductor”

  1. I like this a lot, Genece. It seems to show the creative thought and the movement. I love opera, and we pretty much grew up on it. My father is a tenor, and there is much music in both family trees. The story you tell is lovely. They sound like a wonderful couple.
